Federico Fellini detta la sua biografia al regista canadese Damian Pettigrew in un lungo documentario intervista che ripercorre parallelamente tutta la sua carriera. I racconti del Maestro sono intrecciati con quelli di tecnici, artisti, collaboratori. Tra scene inedite tratte dai suoi capolavori, Fellini svela di essere stato soprattutto un "bugiardo" di talento. I documentari su personalità dello spettacolo - cinematografico o d'altro genere che sia - sono spesso delle delusioni, sostanziandosi per lo più di aneddoti più o meno interessanti e presunti dietro le quinte. Pettigrew evita la trappola convocando testimoni sceltissimi (Benigni, ma soprattutto Stamp e Sutherland) e raccontando per una volta non tanto il Fellini "public figure" del cinema italiano, con presunte piacevolezze annesse e connesse, ma il teorico e l'artista. Ne esce un ritratto insolito e qua e là commovente, dove l'aggettivo bugiardo per una volta equivale a creatore. Di mondi, di immagini, di una visione del cinema come creazione meticolosa e continua dove il genio deve fare pendant con l'organizzazione. E alla fine si prova un'autentico senso di nostalgia.
